Abstract
Student engagement at the junior high level is a challenge for even the most experienced teachers. Early adolescence is near the height of social interaction among peers and this interaction is a common reason for disengagement during instructional time. The junior high choir classroom faces these challenges, as well as those related to the changing voice, self confidence, and social image - doing things well is not always “cool”. This research investigates engagement in the junior high choir classroom and the positive impacts student-to-student interaction can have on the learning environment. It focuses on turning a challenge due to social interaction into a motivating factor for wanting to do your best.
