Abstract
Abstract
The science of reading is scientific-based research about reading and how educators can help our students learn in a way that makes more sense to their brains. The research that has been done about the science of reading looks at how to improve the child’s reading and writing through five main areas phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency, vocabulary and oral language comprehension and text comprehension. The goal of this project is to be able to implement the science of reading into our phonics and reading curriculum in the school district that I work in. The students that were used for this project were students that are on an individualized educational program (IEP). All but one of these students showed growth in the areas of phonemic awareness and reading. The next steps in this project would be to implement the science of reading into the general education classrooms to see the growth that can be made in that setting.
