Abstract
An analysis of self allows an individual to take a deep dive into the different experiences, qualities, education, employment, personal relationships, strengths, resilience, mental health, substance use, values, and many other areas to gather a better understanding of oneself. In this paper, I discussed how I have used different adverse experiences in my life to grow, learn, and to help others who are experiencing mental health or substance use concerns. Understanding how one’s life experiences play a role into future actions, decisions, and choices is important when entering into the helping profession. Through completing assessments, interviewing those around me, and reflecting on the impact of my background, I was able to gain a new perspective into my own life and thinking. Attachment theory was the developmental theory connected to my background/childhood. Person-centered therapy is my therapy of choice and is the foundational theory of my counseling practice. Professional development is important, and I believe that you are never done growing. Through supervision and trainings, I plan to broaden my scope of practice to best support my clients.
Keywords: resilience, personal growth, self-awareness, personal development
