Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if the Florida Fluency Intervention focused on oral reading benefits fifth grade students. The students in this study are students who did not qualify for additional services, but are at risk for struggling with reading. At the fifth grade level, reading has changed from learning to read to reading to learn. Students who are focused on decoding are not able to also focus on comprehension as well. This study looked at intentional implementation of fluency lessons that are presented every day in a variety of formats. The participants were progress monitored weekly and their rate of improvement improved significantly. The Florida Fluency Intervention is a collection of activities that significantly increases fluency.
