Abstract
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) strongly supports parental participation in the special education that the child receives (National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2020). Parent support groups for children with disabilities are voluntary groups that focus on providing social support and information to families. The purpose of this project was to start a parent support group in the local school district. It is the goal of the group is to provide parents the resources and supports needed as they navigate their child’s disability. Research shows that parents feel a sense of belonging and increased skills through both online and in person support groups. According to research, parents feel that online support groups are great for when the child is first diagnosed and in person are important for relationships and the sense of belonging. The need for a parent support group was accessed locally and the plan was put together for the support group.
