Abstract
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a necessary support guided by law to ensure access to communication for individuals with unique and complex communication needs. Regardless of the laws, consistent implementation within the school setting remains a challenge. This paper examines ten common barriers that special education teachers face when supporting implementation of AAC within their special education classroom environment. In addition to the barriers faced, this paper also provides several practical strategies that are grounded in research to overcome these barriers. The barriers that are explored include limited training (teachers and paraprofessionals), lack of administrative and system supports, unclear team roles, challenges with integrating AAC into academic instruction, limited access to AAC devices, difficulty with device operation and maintenance, personal feelings and misconceptions about AAC, and student-specific considerations. This paper highlights the intertwined nature of these barriers and emphasizes that collaboration at the system-level is necessary to support the solutions. Some of the strategies discussed include increasing professional development opportunities for teachers, paraprofessionals, and administration, ensuring structured collaboration opportunities with all involved team members, and providing intentional integration of AAC into daily routines. Providing access to AAC is both a legal requirement and a necessary component of making gains towards equitable communication for all. Special educators have the opportunity to address these barriers and improve communication and meaningful participation for all students.
