Abstract
The Capstone Project that I developed was a one to two week long unit that gives students tools to help them take ownership of their IEP’s, especially during their transition years. Some of the topics taught during the unit are student led IEP’s, transition goals, interest surveys, definitions of the abbreviations that are used in special education, and step-by step instruction to help navigate the due process highway. After each lesson is taught, we (students and staff) will role play each scenario to help reduce anxiety in some students. At a culmination of all the lessons each student is sent home with a flyer/invitation to an open house where the students will have booths that they have made and will explain to their parents/guardians what they have learned. At the open house there will be people from related services, administration, regular ed teachers and outside services.
