Abstract
Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and may negatively affect daytime behavior, emotional regulation, learning, and overall family well-being. This quantitative research proposal examines the relationship between sleep difficulties, behavioral functioning, and family experiences among children with ASD. The study will explore how behavioral and environmental sleep interventions may influence sleep quality and nighttime behaviors, how improved sleep may contribute to changes in daytime behavior, and how parents and caregivers perceive the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing sleep-focused interventions at home. A quantitative research design will be used to collect caregiver-reported data through the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), a standardized measure frequently used to assess sleep behaviors in children with ASD.
Participants will be recruited through a local autism support group using voluntary convenience sampling. Descriptive statistics will be used to examine patterns in sleep behaviors and identify the prevalence and variation of sleep difficulties within the participant group. The literature reviewed suggests that sleep problems are common among children with ASD and may contribute to increased behavioral challenges and caregiver stress. This study seeks to further connect research on sleep with practical strategies that can be implemented by families and educators. Understanding and addressing sleep difficulties may provide meaningful opportunities to improve children’s daytime functioning while also supporting family well-being.
