Abstract
This lesson plan provides an engaging inquiry-based science experience for second-grade students by using strawberries as a hands-on tool for exploring the five senses and developing observation skills. The lesson aligns with science standards focused on planning and conducting investigations based on observable properties. Students learn how scientists use their senses to gather information while also building communication and collaboration skills. The central focus is for students to investigate strawberries through sight, touch, smell, and taste, then record and compare their findings with classmates. The lesson begins with an introduction to the five senses through visuals and guided discussion. Students identify the functions of body parts such as the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and hands, helping them connect prior knowledge to the investigation. Vocabulary terms including senses, texture, function, and strawberries are explicitly taught using examples and class discussion. Learning targets are shared in student-friendly language, so students understand the purpose of the activity. During the investigation, students receive strawberries and a worksheet to document their observations. One strawberry is used for examining color, shape, texture, smell, and internal features, while a second strawberry is reserved for tasting. Students independently write or draw what they notice, then compare similarities and differences with peers at their table. This collaborative component encourages discussion, critical thinking, and respectful sharing of ideas. Formative assessments occur through teacher observation, listening to partner conversations, and whole-class discussions throughout the lesson. The completed worksheet serves as a summative assessment by demonstrating how well students used their senses and accurately recorded observations. Overall, this lesson supports scientific inquiry, vocabulary development, and student engagement through a familiar and meaningful object while helping students understand how observation is an important part of science.
