Abstract

Preparing students at an early age to self-advocate regarding their hearing assistive technology needs is critical for academic success. However, there is currently a limited curriculum that provides early interventionists with the resources to teach young children and their families about Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT). This project aims to address the gap by creating a curriculum specifically focused on HAT. The curriculum was created by translating the existing school-age standards from the Minnesota Compensatory Skills Checklist and adapting them to address the developmental needs of young children and their families. This curriculum is designed to introduce preschool children and their families to Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) through early intervention services at home and engaging classroom activities. The primary objective is to foster a comprehensive understanding, acceptance, and proper usage of HAT among young children and their families. Families will receive valuable resources to support their children at home, including tips and strategies to ensure consistent use of hearing aids. In the classroom, structured routines such as daily listening checks, hands-on practice with HAT equipment, and creating a positive and inclusive environment will empower children to care for their devices confidently. By the conclusion of this curriculum, students and families will have a thorough understanding of various types of HAT, how to use and maintain them, and the critical importance of consistent wear time. As students transition into kindergarten, they will be equipped to use their devices full-time, manage their equipment independently, and seek assistance when necessary.
