Abstract

This paper is a review of the literature regarding potential feeding challenges for infants with ankyloglossia and their mothers. Pertinent studies were reviewed and information was compiled relating to history of tongue tie knowledge, incidence and prevalence, symptoms and effects for mothers and infants, current assessment and protocols, revision, controversies and the role of speech-language pathologists regarding ankyloglossia. A discussion is provided reviewing the current data, evidence, and suggestions for eliminating barriers to improve assessment and diagnosis, particularly by speech-language pathologists.
